Youth Hostel in Porto Moniz, Madeira

Madeira Youth Hostel building The Youth Hostel at Porto Moniz offers cheap accommodation withing easy walking distance of all the main facilities and attractions of the village.

The actual building itself is a large, traditional Madeiran house that dates from the 1870s and is set in an otherwise residential district.

It was acquired by the Local Municipality in 1997 and was substantially refurbished by the Regional Government.

Today, the design and many of the original features are still evident.

It was opened in May 1999.

Porto Moniz Youth Hostel Facilities

Youth Hostel at Porto Moniz The hostel offers basic, but clean, accommodation.

Both private and shared sleeping rooms are available, all fitted with bunk beds.

The shared facilities include a common room with cable television, dining room, bathroom/shower facilities and Internet access.

Silence should be observed between 12:30am to 7:00am

Some limited parking is available.

No meals are provided, but there is a self-catering kitchen open for general use.

Between 2:00pm and 4:00pm each day cleaning is undertaken and access to the building is strictly limited.

Location

Porto Moniz church The youth hostel is located 1km from the center of the town of Porto Moniz.

It is situated back from the coast, about 10 minutes walk from the Municipal Lido area and the natural, volcanic rock, sea-water, lava pools.

People with mobility problems should note that the location is part way up the surrounding hillside.

As you leave the town centre heading for the westward ER101, toward Calheta, you pass a church on your right. Turn right here, into the Caminho da Igreja.

You will see a signpost pointing to Pousada da Juventude as you enter the road.

The hostel is on your left, right at the end of this street.

When we visited, it had three flags (Madeiran, Portuguese and European Community) flying in the small courtyard in front of it.

Road Directions

By Car:-

From Funchal, pick up the freeway (Via Rapida) heading west toward Ribeira Brava. When you reach the signpost to Ribeira Brava, do not leave the freeway, instead, continue through the tunnel to join the ER104. On the ER104, you to head toward São Vicente. As you proceed along the central Madeira valley, you will pass through the Encumeada Tunnel.

At São Vicente, join the ER101 heading westward to Seixal and Porto Moniz. The road from São Vicente to Porto Moniz is about 16km. The total distance from Funchal is about 50km and will take approximately 1 hour.

As you enter Porto Moniz, you reach a small, cascading water roundabout. Keep left here, continuing on the ER101.

After a short distance, you need to turn right down the Rua dos Capitaes, then immediately left just before the church.

Continue to the end of the road and you have arrived!
