Things To Do In & Around Santana, Madeira

Santana, Madeira - Home of a unique house

Traditional thatched triangular cottage Santana is perhaps most famous for its thatched, A-framed house design. They are unique to Madeira. Called Palheiros locally, the design reaches back to the early 1600's.

Today, the same design is also used to house cattle although, for this purpose, corrugated iron usually replaces the thatched roof.

There are a number of the triangular Palheiros A-framed houses in and around the Santana village. A few are still lived in by the locals - with the aid of a government subsidy. Take a look inside. Downstairs is the main living area, whilst upstairs are tiny sleeping quarters. You will be surprised at how spacious they are.

To gain a greater perspective of these traditional houses see our Santana - Palheiros webpage.

February - Festa dos Compadres

Comic actors performing Held in late January or early February each year the Santana, Madeira - Festa dos Compadres Festival takes place in Santana.

For the tourist, the festival highlight is the parade, the exact date varies from year to year, but it is invariably held on a Sunday. In 2009, over 800 individuals dressed in traditional and comic costumes took part in the procession.

The remainder of the festivities is really only for the locals as a series of actors perform sketches that are contrived to poke fun at their politicians and current issues. The highlight for many locals is the "Sentence and Burning of the Compadres". This is when caricatures of those ridiculed are held to account, sentenced by a comic court of public concern and an effigy ceremoniously put to the torch.

Unless you speak Portuguese, you are likely to be bemused by much of the show.

Madeira Features

Santa Clara Convent

Aged religious artwork, vaulted ceilings decorated with holy depictions, items of historical and religious significance and dry, creaking woodwork. All are prominent features of the Funchal's Santa Clara Convent and its adjacent church.

If you are in Funchal and have a couple of hours to spare then you could do worse than to visit this, one of the lesser known buildings open to the public.

The entrance fee is modest and there is no pretence here attempting to assume the role of a glossy tourist attraction. What you see is what you get - and it is still very much a working convent. Albeit today the convent runs on rather more modest proportions than it did in the past.

For the locals, it also operates a much respected kindergarten.

Whilst you are guided around the cloisters, chapel and church, you will be shown what may be considered the foundation stone of Madeira.

The stone lying before the high alter in the Church Santa Clara marks the spot where the discoverer of Madeira lays.
