Madeira's Old North Coast Road Video

Stretching along the north coast via Sao Vicente - Seixal - Ribeira Funda - Ribeira da Janela - Porto Moniz, the Antiga ER101 (Old ER101) is one of the most spectacular drives in Madeira.

The road hugs the rugged coastline as it winds its way along a most scenic 16km.

Literally hacked out of the bare rock by workers dangling from ropes, the north coast road was not only an exhilarating experience for the original builders.

Today, if offers the tourist a roller-coaster of a ride.

This video takes us along the road, from start to finish, in little more than 7 minutes.

On the way, we make several stops. In particular, Seixal and Ribeira da Janela are looked at in rather more detail.

There are tour companies that make the journey along the north coast but, as our video shows, the only true way to experience all the delights is to hire a car and drive it yourself.
