The Colégio Infante D. Henrique

The Colégio Infante D. Henrique is located at the start of the Monte to Funchal walk. The grounds are adjacent to the start of the Monte toboggan run in Madeira. This short video gives an introduction to the Colégio and shows just why the locals have a justifiable pride in their school.

Infante Dom Henrique (or, in English, Prince Henry the Navigator) was the third child of John I of Portugal. He encouraged the settlement of Madeira after João Gonçalves Zarco had rediscovered the archipelago in 1420.

Many aspects of Portuguese life commemorate Infante Dom Henrique, including many academic institutions that carry his name.
