The Madeira Aquarium, Porto Moniz

Fort at Porto Moniz The Madeira Aquarium, Aquário da Madeira, is housed in the renovated São João Baptista Fort.

Originally built in 1730's the fort protected the important harbour town of Porto Moniz from pirate attack. Over the centuries it fell into disrepair.

In 1998, the ruins were acquired by the municipality and a renovation project was started.

The original walls were repaired and the turret reconstructed. The interior was redesigned to hold the aquarium which opened to the public in 2005.

Fish in aquarium The Madeira Aquarium houses 12 themed display tanks that contain around 70 species that are local to the waters surrounding the archipelago.

The main display tank has a seating area so the visitor can relax and just watch time float by.

There is also a shop offering souvenir products along with a cafe, bar and Internet access.

The attraction is about 10 minutes walk eastward from the Municipal rock pools.

It is open everyday, except for Christmas Day, from 9:00am to 6:00pm.
