Monte Village - 24th April 2010

One of the most popular, and famous, tourist destinations in Madeira is Monte.

The village has deep cultural and religious significance. However, Monte also caters for the tourist with a number of delightful attractions.

There are many ways of getting to the village, situated high up in the mountainside overlooking Funchal, but perhaps the most exhilarating way is to journey up in a cable car that departs from Funchal's seafront promenade.

Once there, you can quite easily spend half a day wandering around Monte Church and its surrounding Garden Attractions.

Then, once you have finished your visit, decide if you want to depart on what has to be the most unusual means of transport that you will find anywhere in Madeira more. . .

Ribeiro Frio Tourist Guide - 14th Dec 2009

Ribeiro Frio is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Madeira and this small village has plenty to offer young and old alike.

The trout fish farm is bound to delight children and adults will surely appreciate the rainbow trout dishes at the nearby restaurant.

Two popular levada walks also start from here.

There is the relaxing stroll to the Balcões - a rocky outcrop that offers wonderful views over the valley to the Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on the island.

Meanwhile, there is the more demanding levada trek that makes its way to Portela some 11km away.

There is also a little known walk that few people realise exists, even though most visitors pass right by it. This delightful walk leads you along a forest path, down steps by a fast flowing water channel, to a lovely picnic spot. Just perfect for a hot, sunny afternoon more. . .

Câmara de Lobos Tourist Guide - 4th Nov 2009

Câmara de Lobos harbour

Tourist Guide

One of the most popular of day-out trips for the tourist to Madeira is to visit the quaint harbour village of Câmara de Lobos.

Famous for its brightly painted fishing boats, this destination carries the weight of history with each ebb and flow of the tide.

Aspects of life here, in many respects, have been unchanging for centuries.

But, the traditional labours of fishing and farming, so important since its founding, have now been joined by tourism as the main earners for the inhabitants of Câmara de Lobos.

There is a post-war heritage, as well. For Britain's wartime leader, Sir Winston Churchill, visited here in 1950 and captured various scenes in a number of paintings.

There is much more to be aware of though, for example more. . .

Ribeira da Janela guide - 18th Sept 2009

Campsite at Ribeira da Janela

View our Ribeira da Janela tourist and campsite guide

There are only two official campsite in Madeira. One is on the north coast at Ribeira da Janela. The other is situated on Porto Santo Island.

Ribeira da Janela itself is a small coastal village that has little to offer other than its campsite. It is an occasional spot for surfers and bird watchers, but apart from that it is rather nondescript.

However, Ribeira da Janela benefits from its position on the north coast. Near to all the tourist attractions of Porto Moniz, the accommodation at the Ribeira da Janela campsite is considerably cheaper than the hotels just a couple of kilometres away.

Ribeira da Janela is also an excellent cheap base to stay for those interested in Levada walking as some lovely walks with magnificent views are nearby. It can also serve as a stop-over base for those touring the island more. . .

The Palheiros are red and white, thatched cottages that have an A-frame design. They are one of the iconic symbols of Madeira but really only belong to the Santana district.

Santana also offers other tourist attractions, including the Madeira Theme Park and the nearby cable car at Rocha do Navio. The Madeira Theme Park has something for all ages and you should allow at least half a day to visit it.

Visit Santana in February or July and you will be treated to a local festival. These festivals give a unique insight to Madeiran culture more. . .
