Santa Catarina Photo Gallery - 16th Nov 2009
View our Santa Catarina Parque
Santa Catarina Parque is a lovely spot to spend a quiet couple of hours. But, whilst you enjoy some serious relaxation holiday time, remember the parque has a long and interesting history.
Various aspects of the parque are frequently overlooked by most tourist who venture through the gates. For the most part, most holidaymakers consider the parque as a nice, but brief, diversion on the walk from their hotel into the centre of Funchal.
However, for those who know what to look for, reminders of the parque's heritage are scattered amongst the varied plants, flowers and shrubs.
The parque also has more to offer than just a few paths winding their way around the central lawn. So, before you rush on by; on toward the next big, commercial tourist attraction, take a little time to appreciate exactly what Santa Catarina Parque has to offer.
Our informative photo gallery will give you a glimpse at some of the many features so that you can plan your visit more. . .
Bird of Paradise Flower - 22nd October 2009
View our Bird of Paradise Flower
The iconic Bird of Paradise flower is a national symbol of Madeira. Its representation can be seen everywhere from cheap tourist trinkets to the wonderful Christmas street lights in Funchal.
The sub-tropical climate of Madeira means that the plant blooms more or less or the year round.
They can be seen in formal gardens or even just growing wild by the roadside. The yellow, beak-like flower rises like a proud emblem, defying all but the worst weather.
If you want to return home with a floral remembrance of your holiday, then you will find plenty of shops willing to package your plants suitable for your flight home. Alternatively, you can arrange to have some flowers sent by air freight to your chosen address.
So, delight a friend or relative with a surprise package.
