Notes
A comprehensive tourist guide detailing all the main tourist attractions on the island is given on our free online download.
The main motorway, which is locally known as the Rapida, runs roughly parallel to the south coast from Machico (near Funchal International Airport) in the east to Ribeira Brava in the west. It is shown in yellow with a red border.
Other main traffic routes are shown in red.
Minor roads are shown in yellow.
Drivers new to the island should be aware that even main routes may be narrow and winding in places. Always look ahead toward the next bend in the road. If you see a coach, bus or other large vehicle approaching from the opposite direction, always give way and leave ample turning space for the on-coming vehicle.
Minor roads, those marked in yellow, are liable to be very narrow in places and of a poorer quality.
Being of volcanic origin, the island is mountainous with dramatic, sheer drops. Nearly all roads have a barrier on the outer side - usually rectangular volcanic rock blocks - but you are advised to proceed with caution. You should drive with care and attention at all times.
Road tunnels are indicated by a dotted outline. Please note that, unlike the convention on some other maps, a dotted outline for a road does not mean that the extent of that section was under construction when the document was printed.
The main walking routes are shown by a single dotted line. Brief descriptions of 4 of the main levada routes are given as an aside. However, if you intend to undertake any levada walking you are advised to buy a specialist book that details level of difficulty and bus timetables.
Remember, the archipelago sits in a mid-Atlantic position and is subject to periodical storms and harsh weather. Other walking routes may be situated at high altitudes. The levada routes and dirt tracks may be adversely affected by poor weather. You are advised to check with the Funchal Official Tourism Office before embarking on any journey which may be hazardous. Make sure you go properly equipped for all conditions. In any case, you should always obey any warning notices that are posted along the levada routes.
