Video Description

This video takes you on a walk along Funchal's seafront Promenade. On the way we take a closer look at some of the interesting features that we pass on the journey.

Funchal is the capital of Madeira, so it is not just a lovely tourist destination but also a vibrant, busy, working city.

Starting in the west, just below Santa Catarina Park, we soon pass the Marina. Here you can catch a bite to eat in the waterfront, seafood restaurants.

There is usually a luxury cruise liner in harbour.

A little further on we take a stroll along the pier and sample the graffiti mementos left by visiting yachtsmen painted on the harbour breakwater wall.

Continuing on pass São Lourenço Palace we find a couple of floating restaurants and an assortment of street cafés.

Not much further on, set back from the seafront, is the reconstructed Gate Varadouros, the original Funchal town gate.

Soon, we reach the Praça da Autonomia. This is a rather bland square, but take note as this is where you catch the buses for Monte and the Jardim Botânico Gardens - both popular tourist destinations in Madeira.

The seafront promenade comes to an end when we reach the cable car terminal. If you want to take a ride up to Monte, and experience some wonderful views of Funchal and its seafront promenade on the way, then climb aboard!
