Getting around Madeira and Funchal is often confusing for the tourist. Street signs are not always immediately understood and there is a lack of quality maps.
Now, for the first time on the Internet, is a collection of tourist maps that is aimed specifically at helping visitors to the island identify places of interest.

The Praia Formosa to Câmara de Lobos Coastal Walk was opened in May 2011 and so you will find it in few guide books. However, it is highly recommended.
As an added bonus, at either end of the walk, there is a variety of cafes and restaurants where you can reward yourself with a cool drink and something to eat.

Santa Clara Convent is located just 20 minutes walk from Funchal City Centre. The convent is situated in the historical upper suburbs of the present day city and is a fascinating glimpse into the past. Religious artwork abounds, as does the creaking of dry and aged wood.
Do not expect a multi-media, high tech, all lights flashing tourist attraction. Perhaps one of the charms of the convent is that little concession is made to their paying visitors.

The Quinta das Cruzes Museum is housed in one of the oldest quinta estates in Funchal. Originally built by João Gonçalves Zarco, the discoverer of Madeira, the house has been extensively refurbished and extended over the centuries.
Today, the Quinta is owned by the Regional Government and it houses a collection of items that relates to the economic and cultural development of the Madeiran Archipelago. You will surely find something here that appeals.

The Espada Fish

The espada fish, also known as the black scabbard fish, has been caught in the deep waters off the coast of Madeira since the early 1800s. Its mild, white flesh simply melts in the mouth and makes a delicious meal that you are unlikely to find anywhere else in the world.
But, the espada dishes in the restaurants are not purely an expensive tourist trap. Starting from just a few euros in cost, you'll have no excuse not to endulge in a little local cuisine.

Camacha is a small village located north east of Funchal. It is a popular stop for tourists and is included in most East of Island tour itineraries.
Famous for its wicker arts and crafts industry, Camacha also has claim to fame in the guise of its traditional folklore dance group and its annual apple festival.

Camacha clock tower, that today is part of the O Relogio wicker works showroom building, has a fascinating history.
The clock tower, its timepiece and bell, are linked to Britain and together they tell a story that helps to explain the British heritage that is widespread throughout present day Madeira.

Today, the Christ the Redeemer statue at Ponta do Garajau may be viewed a just another tourist attraction. However, in 1927, it was symbolic of something more profound. With this account, the history and fabric of Madeira society, as it was in the early twentieth century, comes to life.

Few people realise that you can enjoy spectacular views of Funchal and its harbour from the vantage point of Fort Pico which is situated to the west of the city.
What's more, this tourist attraction houses a small museum, is open daily from 9:00am until 6:00pm and has free admittance. Just one more tip: Don't forget you camera when you visit.

Fast, friendly service offering a value-for-money menu makes this perhaps our favourite restaurant in Funchal. We have been enjoying our meals here for over seven years - so, that must say something.
There are many regional speciality dishes on the menu. In particular, the Espada fish cooked with a fried banana is a serving you are unlikely to find outside of Madeira.

The British Cemetery in Funchal can date its origin from 1770. Still existing today, the original grounds have been supplemented and the many headstones open a window, in particular, on Madeira's commercial history.
The tranquillity and beauty of the surrounds are a gentle reflection of the British and other nationalities who choose to make the island their adopted home.
When you visit Madeira, chances are that you will end up in accommodation in the Hotel District that is located in the Lido suburb of Funchal.
Whilst hotel courtesy buses and taxis are available, think about the advantages of walking into Funchal City Centre. There are plenty of interesting features and things to see on the way. And, unlike most other walks in Madeira, the route is almost entirely on the flat.

A challenging walk with some spectacular views takes you up an ancient cobblestone path to Madeira's tallest monument located at Terreiro da Luta.
Most tourists to Monte head for the ever-popular cable car ride or Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. However, nearby, in Terreiro da Luta, is the Nossa Senhora da Paz monument and also the original old railway station building where a small railway museum is housed.

The Old City Gate was originally constructed in 1689 as part of Funchal's fortifications. That Funchal needed protection from pirates and foreign aggression was in little doubt.
Dismantled in 1911 but rebuilt in 2004 as part of Funchal's 500th anniversary celebrations, many tourist pass by without realising the significance of the structure and the part it played in Funchal's development.

The Monte toboggan sled ride is perhaps the longest established tourist attraction in Madeira. Gliding down towards Funchal city centre at breathtaking speeds in little more than a flimsy wicker basket on two wooden runners has always seemed to hold a fascination for visitors to the island.
Today, the hard reality of commercialism has somewhat diminished the traditional values. See our guide and feel confident about enjoying the ride without falling into the waiting tourist traps.

Ribeiro Frio is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Madeira and this small village has plenty to offer young and old alike.
Apart from the chapel, trout fish far, restaurant and environmental education centre, two popular levada walks start from here. There is also an little known forest walk that leads to steps by a fast running water channel and a delightful picnic spot. Most visitors pass right by this walk without realising it even exists. The walk from Ribeiro Frio to the Balcoes and back again is one of the most popular levada routes in Madeira - and for good reason. The views are simply stunning!
Unusually for a levada walk in Madeira, there are no sheer drops to the sides of the pathway, so there is no possibility of vertigo. This makes the route ideal for all - so it is one you should not miss.

If Madeira is famous for one single thing, then it has to be its wine. Used to toast the occasion by the 55 signatories of the American Declaration of Independence on 4th July 1776, it is easy to understand just why Sir Winston Churchill commented: "To drink Madeira is to sip history with every glass."
Madeira did not escape the violent consequences of World War I. On 3rd December 1916, a German U-boat, class 38, sunk the French gunboat, Surprise (680 tons), moored off Funchal. Two further vessels were also sunk.
Following the attack on the ships, the German submarine then proceeded to bombard Funchal for two hours from a range of about 2 miles. Read our account of a little known passage of Madeira's history.
Children will love being able to wander around the turrets and along the windowless tunnels. Meanwhile, adults can appreciate the views of Funchal Bay that are to be had from the fort's rooftop. And, if you feel like spoiling yourself, the Restaurante do Forte is located withing the walls.

Camara de Lobos - A Tourist Guide

One of the most popular of day-out trips for the tourist to Madeira is to visit the quaint harbour village of Camara de Lobos. Famous for its brightly painted fishing boats, this destination carries the weight of history with each ebb and flow of the tide.
There is a post-war heritage, as well. For Britain's wartime leader, Sir Winston Churchill, visited here in 1950 and captured various scenes in a number of paintings. There is much more to be aware of though, see full details in our tourist guide.

One of the easiest and most rewarding walks in Madeira stretches from the Lido in the hotel district of Funchal to the pebble beach at Praia Formosa. With only a few steep slopes, there are no sheer drops to intimidate you.
This coastal walk gives splendid views of the Atlantic Ocean and passes some important landmarks and buildings along the way. You will see some of the industrial and wartime heritage of Madeira. And, of course, their are plenty of opportunities for refreshment stops.
The centre boasts a pavilion with multimedia displays and educational material for those interested in the facts. Also featured is an innovative, 3D solar system creation film. The surrounding grounds are also delightful.

If you hire a car during your holiday to Madeira, an excellent way to make your way to the famous, natural volcanic seawater rock pools of Porto Moniz is to incorporate into the journey the driving tour along the old north coast road, the Antiga ER101.
The views are spectacular on this narrow, winding road. The fresh sea breeze can make it exhilarating and a bit like a roller-coaster ride. There are Atlantic waves breaking against the coast below you and waterfalls cascade down from the high sea cliffs above you. Who could resist it?

The Quinta Palmeira Estate is one of the less well known tourist attractions of Madeira. Nevertheless, it is well worth a visit if you have an interest in the history of the island or you want to visit a garden with a difference.
Today, the Quinta, or mansion house, is closed to the public, but you can wander around the surrounding grounds and imagine yourself as a rich English sugar merchant.

The Quinta Vigia occupies a prime position in Funchal with panoramic views over the harbour and city. It stands in grounds that has a long, varied and interesting history. Many illustrious people have lived here - sometimes, somewhat tragically.
Today, it is the official Presidential Residence. Tourists are allowed to visit the gardens and the 17th century chapel that is alongside the Quinta. Both are well worth a visit.

Once, Madeira was considered unsuitable as a family holiday destination. There was a distinct lack of attractions and things to do for children. That has all changed now and the Madeira Theme Park is a major item on any holidaying family's list of places to visit.
The Parque Tematico da Madeira, as it is known in Portuguese, offers a wonderful day out for adults, teenagers and children alike. There is plenty to keep all the family occupied.

Ribeira da Janela is somewhat isolated on the northern coast of Madeira. The weather here is generally cooler than the south of the island. Likewise, the sea is generally rougher than that of the south coast. Near to the village is a river with a campsite on its west bank.
At the mouth of the river there is a pebble beach. This is a spot often chosen by surfers. Here, the north-easterly Atlantic swell frequently gives good conditions to surf and enjoy this rugged part of the coastline.

Its traditional A-framed structure is topped with a thatched roof. To say that the accommodation is somewhat confined would be an understatement!

Ponta de Sao Lourenco is the peninsula at the extreme eastern edge of Madeira. It has a well trodden path which, at times, can be a little challenging. However, as you make your way over the barren terrain, dramatic panoramic views stretch out in every direction. You will enjoy unrivalled views of both the north and south of the island.

Unlike the Monte Toboggan run and the Cable Car ride, it will cost you nothing. It also comes with a bonus, for, as you make your way down the steep roads, you will be treated to some spectacular views of the city and harbour.
